Our Water Heater Maintenance Plans

With water heaters, maintenance can be tricky. Because for both types of systems, sediment builds up over time through normal operation, and slowly degrades both performance and lifespan.

When this happens:

  • The buildup acts as an insulator and reduces energy efficiency, which means your hydro bill will start to creep up
  • You’ll start to experience longer run times to achieve the same level of heating, which puts more wear and tear on the equipment
  • For tank units, those longer run times also cause overheating of the unit itself, which eventually weakens the steel and damages the glass lining at the bottom of the tank, increasing the chances of leaking
  • And finally, if that sediment buildup becomes severe enough, it can clog the drain valve (tank) or impede the flow sensor and other key components (tankless), making future maintenance impossible requiring replacement

Instead, simply having one of our highly skilled technicians come out for an annual maintenance appointment will ensure your water heater will continue run smoothly and efficiently, and maximize its useful life. They follow a detailed list of 21 inspection and cleaning checkpoints, providing you with the most thorough maintenance in the industry.

Water Heater Service FAQ

How can I fix a water heater that isn’t producing hot water?

While there are many reasons why your heating unit could fail, the most common is a dirty flame sensor. It can be cleaned with very light grit sandpaper; however, accessing this area requires technical skill to open the combustion chamber to reach the component.

If you are not comfortable with this, we recommend you contact a water heater repair company for further assistance. A trained professional will be able to better diagnose and repair your system.

How often is tank water heater maintenance needed?

It’s best to perform a maintenance every one to two years. Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank reduces the efficiency of the system. Flushing it annually maximizes the tank’s performance and extends its lifespan.

Other safety checks and general cleaning also protect you from any immediate hazardous and reduces the chances of premature failure.

How often is tankless water heater maintenance needed?

These units should be maintained once a year as the buildup of sediment within the heat exchanger and internal components has a more severe consequence on the system. The extra diligence will ensure your system operates at a high efficiency.

Is my water heater tankless?

If your heater unit is mounted on the wall and is roughly the shape of rectangular box, it’s tankless, which means that it heats the water as it passes through the system. If it’s a large cylinder standing on the floor, it’s a tank, which means it stores heated water and then delivers it as needed. Regardless, both need to be sized properly to ensure it they provide you enough hot water.

How do tankless water heaters it work?

As soon as you turn on the tap and water starts flowing through your system, a flow sensor within the unit monitors the amount of water traveling through the system. It then uses an algorithm to determine the required amount of heat or “BTUs” needed to quickly heat the water to your desired temperature, and adjusts automatically as your water continues to run.

*Note: sediment buildup can clog the flow sensor preventing it from properly monitoring flow. Regular maintenance is important to ensure the sensor is free all debris.

What are my options for water heater replacement?

The three most popular styles of water heating are conventional/natural draft, power vent, and tankless. Each one has their pros and cons you can learn about here.

If you’re looking to replace your current unit, we carry some of the latest models with everything from “buffer tanks to eliminate the “cold water sandwich” you get with older models, to mixing valves that protect you from legionella bacteria and scalding.

Why choose a tankless water heater for replacement?

These systems have numerous advantages over tank systems. Here is a quick summary:

  • Longer lifespan
  • Increased energy savings
  • Lower risks of leaks
  • Compact, sleek, and quiet
  • Lower risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning or other safety concerns

Note that the quality of the installation is essential for the performance and longevity of these systems. Poor installations can result in inefficient heating and premature failure of the unit.
