What is HVAC and how do its components work? Here, we’ll provide a comprehensive description to help you better understand the system so you can use this information to your best advantage. Let’s break it down.
 
HVAC-components

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. This is the building system that regulates the inside temperature of your home and, in some systems, the air quality as well. The principles of HVAC design include the basic theory of system operation and the factors that determine the size and capacity of the equipment installed in the system. One of the most important HVAC design considerations is correctly calculating the heating and cooling loads that the system will support.   

Different styles of cooling include: 

  • Window AC - It is designed to cool a single room and can be a good, easy-to-install option if a central air conditioning system is not practical or if you want to cool a single room rather than the whole house.
  • Central AC - This is a split system, which includes an outdoor unit containing a condenser coil and compressor and an indoor evaporator coil, usually installed in conjunction with your furnace or air handler. The compressor pumps refrigerant through the system.
  • Portable AC - It takes in room air, cools it, and directs it back into the room, venting warm air outside through an exhaust hose you install in a window. Controls on the unit allow you to adjust settings such as fan speed and temperature. 

Different methods for heating include: 

  • Boilers - The water is pumped through pipes to be heated rapidly.
  • Water heaters - They store and preheat 30-50 gallons of water in a tank. That preheated water is used whenever someone uses hot water for showers, does the laundry, or washes dishes. The tank then refills to be reheated once again. 
  • Combi boilers - A combination of both heating and potable water, they provide hot water on demand by diverting the water through a heat exchanger. 

Other HVAC components include: 

  • Packaged systems - Package units are unique, all-in-one systems that supply both cooling and heating equipment in one package. These units sit on the ground or rooftop outside of your home or business. They come in three forms:
- Packaged heat pumps offer heating and cooling using heat pump technology.
- Packaged air conditioners cool your home and can heat it as well, using electrical strip heat.
- Packaged gas-electric units offer all-in-one air conditioning and natural gas-powered               furnace  performance.

  • Air Handlers - These are blowers that distribute heat or cool air produced from another source.
  • Humidifiers - They emit water vapor into a space to increase the level of humidity.
  • Air Purifiers - They remove contaminants from the air in a room.
  • UV Lights - These kill mold and bacteria in AC systems, providing healthier indoor air quality.
  • Ductwork - This provides a controlled path for airflow throughout the home or building.
